Worn Spark Plugs Will Make Your Engine Knock

Did you know that worn spark plugs can make your engine knock? This is just one sign that the plugs need to be changed out. Premier Auto Repair is going to list the other signs of bad spark plugs below. Do not worry. If your plugs need to be changed, we will remove the old ones and replace them with new ones that will restore your engine’s performance and stop the knocking noise.

Hard Starts

One of the first things that happens when the spark plugs are wearing down is that your engine gets very difficult to start. The reason why is that the plugs may have a difficult time generating sparks to ignite the air and fuel in the cylinders. In some cases, your engine may fire up only to stall right away. If the plugs are in really bad shape, you may not be able to get your engine started at all.

Rough Idling

If you do get your engine started, you are going to notice that it is idling roughly. This, too, is a sign that not all of the plugs are firing in the cylinders. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for your engine to operate smoothly. As such, the engine will idle roughly and may even stall if you are sitting at an idle for a long time. This can be frustrating if it stalls while you are sitting in traffic, for example.

Engine Misfiring

The reason why the engine idle is rough is that the engine is misfiring, or shall we say the spark plugs are misfiring. When this happens, your engine will stutter and hiccup. You have a spark plug in each cylinder that generates a spark in a specific order. All of this is controlled in newer automobiles by the engine control module. If one or more of the plugs is not firing, or firing out of order, the engine will misfire

Poor Efficiency

Unfortunately, this misfiring is going to cause your vehicle’s acceleration to lag. As if that weren’t bad enough, you will also see a reduction in your fuel efficiency. The reason why is it the engine will burn more fuel as it struggles to produce power with the worn spark plugs. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the new plugs will restore your engine and fuel efficiency right away.
