Five Common Maintenances You Should Have Done And When

Oil Change

One of the most important maintenance services you can have done for your vehicle is an oil change. Engine oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle and keeps your engine running and prevents overheating and significant damage to your engine. With every oil change from Premier Auto Repair in Tyler TX, we do replace not only the oil and oil filter but also include an inspection of your fluid levels and a brief inspection of your brakes. When you should get an oil change, the recommendation of when you should get an oil change is 3,000 miles for conventional oil and 5,000 miles for synthetic oil. Or every 3 to five months, depending on how much you drive.

Brake Replacement / Inspection

Getting a brake inspection or replacement is essential since your brakes are vital for your safety while driving. A brake inspection includes checking your brake pad life, inspecting the rotors for hotspots, checking the calipers, and checking brake fluid levels. This ensures you know if you need to have any of these components replaced or how long you have until they need to be replaced. This should be done every six months for an inspection and 40,000 to 50,000 miles for a replacement. This could vary depending on driving habits.

All The Different Filters

Did you know that there are several different filters in your vehicle? You have the:

  • Engine filter (replace every 15,000 to 30,000 miles)
  • Cabin air filter (replace once a year)
  • Fuel filter (replace every 2-3 years)
  • And oil filter (replace with every oil change or 3 – 5 thousand miles)

Each has the job to filter contaminants out and purify, but only half are for air, and the other is for liquids. The fuel and oil filters filter out pollutants from the engine oil and fuel to prevent clogs. The other two, the cabin and engine filters, are there to purify the air we breathe and the air running into the engine.

Belts And Hoses

It is essential to have your belts and hoses checked frequently. Depending on your vehicle, you will have two main belts, your serpentine belt and your timing belt. Some cars have a timing chain instead of a belt. The general rule of thumb is to change your serpentine and timing belt every 50,000 miles. Timing chains should be replaced every 80,000 to 120,000 miles. Hoses should be changed every four years.
